What are ‘The Pontypridd Tales’? Well, they are going to be a series of films written and directed (most likely) by myself based in Pontypridd. No genre is outlawed. As long as I think I can make it relevent and kept in context.
So far, I’ve made the one. ‘The Legend Of Don Williams’. I plan to make more. The aim is to do at least one a year.
I was born and raised in Pontypridd and like the idea of setting films here. Why not? Ponty is full of character and characters! There haven’t been many films based here. Granted there have been some films that shot in Pontypridd but none that used the town as a character, none that named the town. At the moment we seem to have Dr. Who/Torchwood doing a bit in Ponty but when you watch it back on screen they lead you to believe it’s Cardiff or London or space. I think it would be brilliant if John Barrowman would say “we’ve had a sighting of some alien tree down Ynysangharad park, Pontypridd, throwing acorns at the kids on the swings. Let’s move team!” I hate Dr Who and Torchwood. Not my cup of tea but if they did this kinda stuff I’d watch it.
I think that done right any genre of film can be made here. As long as it kept believeable. ‘Don Williams’ is a film noir crime story which looks at a criminal underworld who run the town. Not the kinda film you imagine to be set in Ponty. The film doesn’t focus on chav kids binge drinking or using drugs. There’s some violence sure but it’s all in context. Someones been killed but you can’t use a gun in Ponty. Have to think of other means and I think this is the key.
